Creative pocket door ideas for home offices and workspaces

One of the most popular uses for the pocket door around the home is for creating a home office or home workspace. In recent years this has become more and more popular as flexible working patterns have become more common and acceptable. While this was popularised during the pandemic, when people were forced to work from home in many cases, home working was already very common and has become more-so as businesses start to see the advantages.

This means that people have been creative in how they use space in the home to find a solution for home working. This has led to three common scenarios; completely changing the use of a room to become a home office, making a room multi-purpose (a home office during the day and a kids playroom or guest bedroom at other times, for example) and creating a flexible space in an open plan setting. In all these cases, the pocket door is the key to making this work and is therefore essential in the creation of a practical home office space. So let’s look at each scenario:

  • Changing the use of a room – If an old room is under-used, you can change its use to a home office. This could even involve moving walls or dividing a larger room into two smaller rooms. Either way, a pocket door enables this.
  • Multi-purpose rooms – A room that isn’t used during the day or during the week, can be a temporary home-working space. A pocket door enables you to accommodate extra furniture for a comfortable workspace, while also retaining the original features for the room, such as a bed and drawers if it was a guest bedroom.
  • Flexible space in an open plan setting – Pocket doors are ideal for creating temporary spaces on a ground floor that is open plan. Here you can open and close spaces using the pocket door, so that a home-working space is private, enclosed and peaceful during the day, but opens up to become a larger, communal part of a family home in the evening and at weekends. This type of flexible approach can also be used for other common household So as well creating a home office space, you can also create temporary spaces for eating, socialising and watching TV with the family.

How to be creative with pocket doors for home officescreative pocket doors

In all the scenarios listed above, the pocket door can be a standard single pocket door, but there are other styles of special pocket doors which can help to accommodate multiple uses, and can enable some creativity so that a workspace feels fresh, inviting and motivating.

  • Glass pocket doors – These can be essential for a small home office space, so that you can spend a day working in a small space without feeling inhibited and claustrophobic. Small spaces with dim lighting can add to stress and are not conducive with productivity and creativity, so a glass pocket door lets light shine in and can still retain privacy if you add a satin opaque finish. This can also be used to create a colourful or floral design, which is good for generating a positive and motivating workspace. Using sandblasted lines enables you to create designs which complement internal décor and make a home office space more comfortable and appealing, and make ‘work’ a more pleasant place to be.
  • Syntesis pocket doors – These are also known as ‘flush’ pocket doors, and are essentially standard doors but with no surrounding architrave. So the door sits flush with the wall and provides a pleasingly seamless effect. This is ideal for a contemporary setting, and flush pocket doors are commonly used in commercial workplaces. Hence, this would be ideal for a home office where you want a clean, fresh and uncluttered design.
  • Customising pocket doors – There is nothing to stop you customising a standard single pocket door with your own artwork or wallpaper or a mirror, as long as the door width can still be accommodated in the wall pocket when the door is opened. So wallpaper the internal side of your pocket door to create a colourful and appealing design, while the external side can remain plain. Of course you can paint the internal side of the door also.
