What is a flush door system?
A pocket door is an increasingly popular type of internal door which creates space in a room by sliding along an overhead rail into a pocket and hence doesn’t use any of the space immediately in front of or behind the door. This space becomes usable and opens up opportunities for more practical and efficient use of buildings, particularly where space is limited. Pocket doors are considered a very modern and minimalist interior design feature, because they disappear from view when opened, and don’t create a barrier or encroach on space. But a variation of the pocket door, called a ‘flush pocket door’, provides even more visual and practical benefits in this respect.
The flush pocket door - a description
Just like a standard pocket door, the flush pocket door is concealed from view when opened, because it disappears into the wall cavity ‘pocket’. However, when it is closed, the flush pocket door is also concealed in the sense that it sits flush to the wall and therefore blends seamlessly into the wall. This is primarily an aesthetic feature, as it creates a clean and unobtrusive visual appearance that is ideal for a contemporary home or workplace, but the flush pocket door also provides the same practical and functional benefits as the standard pocket door.
The flush pocket door is able to create this flawless impression by sitting flush to a wall, because it has no architrave around the door, no jambs and no visible door frame at all. This creates a minimalist aesthetic as the door is effectively hidden and has no surrounding trim.
How are flush pocket doors designed?
Flush pocket doors create their seamless elegance by using a special counterframe and edge profile which allows the door to sit directly flush with the plaster finish of the wall. This creates an ultra-contemporary look as the door is effectively invisible. This refined and simple door design offers the following features:
- Concealed – Even the hinges are concealed so there are no mechanics on show, and the door handle can be a flush finger pull, so there is nothing obtrusive about the design.
- Locks – The flush pocket door can be locked for privacy use in rooms such as an en-suite, bathroom or toilet.
- Configuration – You can install the flush pocket door with four options for configuration, ie. to open inwards or outwards and to open from the left or from the right. This means the flush pocket door system can be tailored to meet the demands of a tight space and your exact needs.
- Stud wall – The flush pocket door system is ideally installed within a stud wall system. This can be a minimum thickness of 63mm, but there is no maximum stud wall thickness.
- Compliance – Flush pocket doors can be supplied as fire doors and non-fire doors, as required.
The benefits of a flush pocket door system
If you are considering installing a pocket door, then here are the benefits of choosing a flush pocket door system:
- Space-saving – Compared to a traditional hinged door, a flush pocket door system opens up floor space so that you can more efficiently use the space available to you. This could help you create a new use for a room, create a new room within a larger room or create a multi-use room, but it means you can fully utilise space to deliver lifestyle improvements or workplace improvements.
- Visual appeal – Flush pocket doors sit flush to a wall and are effectively concealed and invisible. This is easy on the eye and creates a sparse, flawless aesthetic that is clean, minimalist and very contemporary.
- Flexibility – Flush pocket doors can be used as temporary walls to divide large spaces and create different zones according to the time of day. This can provide privacy in larger spaces, and intimacy in the home, but can be opened up for communal activities such as an open-plan office at work, or a dining or entertaining area in the home.
- Design options – You can style a flush pocket door with different handles, accessories and hardware, but can also introduce design ideas such as mirrors, wallpaper or wall art, as long as this doesn’t protrude from the door and provide an obstruction to it opening into the wall cavity pocket.
- Light – Flush pocket doors are not a barrier to natural light when open, as they slide into the pocket and disappear from view, while a traditional hinged door blocks daylight even when it is open. As well as hindering the comfort and enjoyment of a room, blocking natural light can lead to poor energy efficiency also.
