What is a floorboard safe?
Everybody’s security needs are different, in terms of it being for a home or a business, but also in terms of the type of contents you want to secure. These can have high financial value, or a high personal value, or a bit of both. Or you may need to secure items that have a high legal value, such as contractual documents or digital mediums containing personal data. Whatever your security needs are, the option to keep them safe and secure should be available. But the physical size and shape of a safe is not the only thing you need to consider, you also need to think about the location of a safe.
The items you need to keep safe may be able to be stored in a cash box or a portable safe, or you may wish to conceal a safe in a wall cavity or secure the safe to the floor. Bolting a safe to a permanent fixture is a great way of ensuring a thief can’t just pick it up and run off with it, but for that extra layer of security, many people also like to hide their safe and keep it completely hidden from view, and for that reason a floorboard safe is the complete security solution.
The difference between a floorboard safe and an underfloor safe
So a floorboard safe is a type of safe that can be hidden underneath a floor between two floorboard joists. This means you can store valuables below floor level and then conceal the safe with floorboards and then carpet or tiles. The safe can be bolted to floorboards, or it can be left free. Either way, the safe can’t be seen and there is no obvious clue that it exists. So any thief or intruder in a property won’t enter a room and have any idea there are valuables in it.
A floorboard safe is different to an underfloor safe, because an underfloor safe is designed to be cemented into a stone or concrete floor. Again, this makes it impossible for a thief to pick it up and leave the premises with it, but it does make it a permanent fixture of the house or business. So if you wanted to move to a new home or new premises, you couldn’t take an underfloor safe with you, but you could take a floorboard safe with you. Another difference, is that an underfloor safe being cemented into a stone or concrete floor, means it can only be used on the ground floor of a building. A floorboard safe can be installed on a ground floor, if it isn’t a solid floor and there is a void underneath the floorboards, but also on an upper floor, ie. where there are also floorboards and a void underneath a floor in which the safe can fit.
The important features of a floorboard safe
Floorboard safes are now a very popular type of safe because they are a good size and are flexible in terms of what you can fit in them. The floorboard safe supplied by MB Direct has the following important features:
- A cash rating of £1000 for insurance purposes
- Felt-lined, so contents such as paper documents or cash won’t get damp and other items won’t get damaged
- UK-made
- Suitable for a home or business
- Made from heavy gauge steel, so strong and robust
- Key operated with a spare key supplied
The floorboard safe comes in two sizes, which differ only in the depth of the safe, so they are either 343mm x 127mm x 203mm or 343mm x 127mm x 305mm. This is a decent sized safe and should be sufficient for storing various items such as cash, jewellery, documents, USB sticks and even some personal collections of value, such as photos. An important consideration to make, however, is that the floorboard safe is usually covered in both floorboards and carpet or tiles. So it is quite a big task to uncover all this to access the safe. For this reason, you don’t really want to use this type of safe for items that you regularly need to access, as this can become awkward and time-consuming. If you need to access valuable items quite often, they would be better stored in a wall safe, or a safe you can fit into a cabinet or wardrobe. This would enable regular access without too much trouble.
