What are flush door systems?

It’s the simple things in life that sometimes catch our imagination and fulfil us more than lavish and extravagant things. And when it comes down to interior design that is definitely the case, particularly if you are fitting out a contemporary property, and whether it is a workplace or a residential home. Flush doors, sometimes also known as jib doors, are a great example of this; something that is defined by how uncomplicated it is, and its understated nature is what makes it so effective. So what is a flush door system, how does it work and what are the benefits?

A flush door system is a simple door design that has no design features on either side of the door facings and has no surrounding architrave on the door frame. There is no panelling or bevelling, just a simple flat material which uses invisible frames and concealed hardware. This provides a seamless effect whereby the door sits flush with the wall and provides a clean, sleek and minimalist effect. And with our flush door systems at MB Direct, even the hinges are concealed, so there are no mechanics on view, just the neat, faultless and extremely satisfying operation of the door opening. This simple and detail-light quality means that flush doors are also sometimes referred to as concealed doors, invisible doors, secret doors and hidden doors.

The benefits of a flush door systemwhat are flush doors?

  • Contemporary – Flush door systems are clean and modern with straight, flat lines and will instantly bring your interior design right up to the present day. In comparison standard doors are textured and traditional and provide a very different visual effect.
  • Concealed – Our flush doors are seamless openings that are barely visible, and provide an almost unbroken feature along your walls, which is ideal for modern homes where uniform flawlessness is your objective.
  • Lightweight – Our flush doors are lightweight and easy to install with stud wall systems.
  • Design opportunities – The plain and simple design of the flush door system can be offset by more decorative elements in any setting, such as wall art, wallpaper, plants and flowers or flooring.
  • Design convenience – Because there are no design features to the flush door system, it can easily complement any existing features you have in the home or workplace, so you don’t have to change them.
  • Fire-rated – You can install fire-rated flush doors where this is a safety requirement. This can be both in a commercial building and a residential property. Fire-rated doors are tested to withstand the spread of smoke and fire for a specific amount of time, ie. in order to enable people to escape a building. This does not impact on the appearance of the door system but does provide an essential safety feature.
  • Versatility – There are four design variants to flush door systems which can be applied to how your building is configured. So the door can be installed to swing into a room or out of a room, and the door handle and hinges can be installed to open on the right or the left of the door. This versatility also extends to how and where they can be used, because flush door systems are appropriate for bedrooms, bathrooms or living rooms in a domestic home, and can be used for offices, meeting rooms, training rooms or boardrooms in a workplace.
  • Thermal performance – The flush profile of these doors means there are minimal gaps around the edge of the door. This is ideal for preventing thermal transfer and hence the flush door system will help with energy efficiency by reducing warm air loss.
  • Noise control – For the same reasons as above, flush door systems help to prevent noise travelling and hence are ideal for areas where peace, privacy and confidentiality are important.
  • Timeless – Although we have already boasted that our flush door systems are modern and contemporary, in truth their simplicity means they will never go out of fashion. Because there are no visible features, the flush door system can belong in any home or workplace, however it is styled now or in the future.
  • Colours – You can choose from a range of colours and finishes to ensure your flush door system matches the adjacent and surrounding colour schemes of your interior design. This allows you to revel in the simplicity of the design, but you still have the freedom to express your design flair.
